A South Knoxville middle school showcased renovations to a historic stadium.

Demolition for the South-Doyle Middle School football complex was set for 2012, but residents fought to keep it open.

Friday, during a special ribbon cutting ceremony, the school showed off the improvements. They include structural repairs, repainting, and new plumbing.

The stadium, dating back decades, holds an important place in the minds of many people in South Knoxville.

"When it came down that they were going to demolish it it kinda broke my heart. You know time goes on but then when they came up and said they were gonna re-do it; nobody knows how much it means to me to walk by and see that sign up there. I hope it's still there whenever I go," said Pete Stafford, former South-Young HS football coach.

The field at South-Doyle Middle School is named after Mr. Stafford.

The stadium was used as South-Young High School's stadium from 1976 to 1991 when South-Young merged with Doyle High School to become South-Doyle High School.
