CINCINNATI -- Star Trek star George Takei will lead the World's Largest Chicken Dance at this year's Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, city officials announced Monday morning.
Takei, best known for his portrayal of Mr. Sulu in the Star Trek TV and film series, will be in town Sept. 20-22 for three performances with the Cincinnati Pops.
"He is a cultural phenomenon," said Pat Sheeran, vice president, corporate and community programming at the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. "He's a true celebrity. He's going to be fun and add a new level of excitement and energy to the event."
The Chicken Dance will take place at 4 p.m. Sept. 21 on Fountain Square downtown.
Cincinnati Reds legend Tom Browning led the Chicken Dance at last year's Oktoberfest Zinzinnati. Past Chicken Dance leaders have included Reds Hall of Famer Joe Morgan, Verne "Mini-Me" Troyer, former Bengal Chad Johnson, the Monkees' Davy Jones, rock icons Eddie Money and Vince Neil, the "Old left-hander" Joe Nuxhall, and UFC fighter Rich Franklin.
This year's Oktoberfest Zinzinnati will have nine stages, the most ever, according to the Chamber.
There will also be an Oktoberfest kickoff event at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport 8-10 a.m. Sept. 20 to attract Green Bay Packers fans coming into town for the team's game against the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium at 1 p.m. Sept. 22.
