(WBIR-West Knoxville) Knox County students toting backpacks walked side by side with parents carrying coffee in the Wednesday early morning light as they participated in International Walk to School Day.

At West Hills Elementary School, 300 students and family members were expected to participate this year.

In years past, special guests like School Superintentent Jim McIntyre and Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett walked with the students. This year, Dr. Elizabeth Alves, Chief Accountability Officer for the Knox County Schools joined the trek to West Hills Elementary.

In a press release, the school system says the event is coordinated in partnership with the Knoxville Regional Planning Transportation Organization Safe Routes to School Coalition, Knox County Health Department, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan.
