Plans to build a long-awaited senior center in a west Knox County community are moving forward.

On Wednesday, Mayor Tim Burchett and other county leaders announced the Karns Senior Center will be built at the Knox County Sportspark off Oak Ridge Highway.

The center will be easy to get to, with a level parking lot for increased accessibility.

Leaders hope to approve the final designs and break ground on the project soon.

Mayor Burchett says the community has been very involved in the process of establishing the center and there will be plenty of activities for seniors to enjoy.

"It used to be that senior centers were just a big open area. There will be physical activities, there will be something going on everyday. They actually, a lot of the seniors take field trips, dance classes. The most trouble I ever got into as mayor is when we changed the date of a dance," said Mayor Burchett.

Leaders hope the project will be finished sometime next year. The senior center will be the county's sixth. There are three additional locations in the city.
