(WBIR) Thousands of handwritten messages of love, support and thanks are on their way to the men and women who protect our nation.

On Tuesday, volunteers sorted through thousands of cards as part of the "Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes" program. Organizers said about a dozen people spent their morning working at the Red Cross's Knoxville headquarters.

Volunteers said the seemingly simple acts of kindness mean more than most people realize.

"These are really more important than anyone knows," explains volunteer Lori Gallagher. "This is a blessing that they're going to get at Christmas to know the love of Christ or just know the love of another person on the other side of the Earth or even on the other side of the country is thinking about them. I mean that really does mean a lot to them - man or woman."
