Efforts to build a new middle school in West Knox County are getting the attention of Mayor Tim Burchett.

He spoke with neighbors and community leaders Monday night. That same group has met in the past to rally support.

They say Northwest Knox County is booming, and the area needs another school to keep up with community growth.

Mayor Burchett voiced his support at Monday's meeting.

"Absolutely we need one. This area is so successful. Folks want to live here. They love the environment and I don't blame them. I grew up in West Knoxville. It's something that's going to be needed in the future. There again, it's going to be the superintendent and the school board. They're going to make that initial decision," said Mayor Burchett.

The four middle schools currently in the area are near 80 percent capacity or higher.
