A person has been taken to UT Medical Center to treat burns and severe smoke inhalation after a fire sparked in his apartment.

Firefighters say the occupant had second and third degree burns to his upper torso.

The fire broke out at Briarcliff Apartments in West Knoxville around 7:30 Tuesday evening. Firefighters say the fire sparked in the injured person's living room, and was contained to one unit. Some of the lower units were water damaged.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
