(WBIR-Downtown Knoxville) The man accused of kidnapping his ex-wife, and taking her to North Carolina Wednesday, was in federal court Thursday afternoon,
Dennis Richard Smith, 53, is charged with one count of kidnapping. He faces up to life in prison, a $250,000 fine, up to five years of supervised release, and a $100 federal fine.
On Wednesday, the FBI said Smith took Tamra Beam, 51, from a house she was cleaning on Sheffield Drive in West Knoxville. After a nearly 12-hour search, authorities found Beam and Smith at a rest area on I-40 in Marion, North Carolina. Beam was not hurt, authorities added.
In Judge Bruce Guyton's courtroom, Smith was wearing street clothes when he waived his preliminary hearing.
He will remain in federal custody until the next court date. It has not been announced.
