(WBIR) West High School broke ground Monday on its new athletic complex, which includes renovations to the existing James M. "Doc" Simpson Weight Training Center.

Construction on the new 4,000 square-foot workout facility is slated to start next week. The building is expected to open by August 1.

"It's been a dream and something we've wanted to do for a very long time, for several years," said West High School coach Scott Cummings. "But now, we can honestly say that, you know, facility wise, we really won't have anybody that has anything above us."

Private dollars funded the athletic complex.
