(WBIR, Knoxville) - Construction will start soon on a new senior center in Knox County.
Wednesday morning local officials gathered in the Karns community to break ground on the new facility. It will be located at the Knox County Sportspark property on Oak Ridge Highway.
The new senior center will have an outdoor kitchen and plenty of indoor space for meetings, crafts and other activities.
"There's large senior groups that are already active in the community. It just kind of gives them a place, and it brings the community together. It allows seniors to get out of the house with activities that are planned for them, and they don't have to do anything but show up and participate," said Knox County Commissioner Chairman Brad Anders.
The project also includes a new field house for the youth sports programs as well.
