Some drivers say roundabouts are confusing. They're a free flowing four way intersection that's designed to reduce traffic congestion and increase safety.8-15-14

(WBIR-Cedar Bluff) The term "roundabout" is more of a sight you'll find on European roads, not in East Tennessee. However, more of them are replacing traditional four-way intersections.

"You have people that are impatient, they pull out taking risk, you had high speeds and all those things could be better addressed with a roundabout than a traditional intersection," said Jim Snowden with Knox County Engineering and Public Works.

There are currently approximately a dozen roundabouts in the county. Two of the newest ones are on Bob Gray Road in West Knox County.

"It's a fairly new thing, especially in East Tennessee," Stephanie Milani with AAA of East Tennessee. "It really cuts down on the number of t-bone crashes and head-on collisions."

The point is you can only make right-hand turns, it's safer than going left. However, don't expect every intersection turned into a roundabout.

"You have some grades approaching it that it wouldn't work so sometimes it's a good fit, sometimes it isn't," Snowden added.

Another roundabout in construction is on Northshore Drive, at the intersection of Choto Road.
