Add another one to the weird Jelly Belly flavors. The company now has a draft beer-flavored jelly bean. The jelly bean tastes like a Hefeweizen-inspired ale, according to Jelly Belly' Candy Companys website.
Note: There is no alcohol in the jelly bean.
Development of the draft beer flavor took three years, said Tomi Holt, director of communications for Jelly Belly, in an interview with USA TODAY Network.
The company receives a steady stream of ideas from customers, she said.
"Beer has been on that list for many, many years now," she said.
The process to develop the beer flavor was particularly challenging. The flavor team had to capture the different elements of beer while avoiding the bitterness, Holt said.
"First, we tried to work on matching the hops. Then we worked on the yeast flavor," said Ambrose Lee, Jelly Belly's research and development manager, in a video on the company's website.
Draft beer joins other alcoholic drink-inspired flavors by Jelly Belly, from Mai Tai to piña colada. All flavors inspired by alcoholic drinks are marketed to adults, Holt said.
Jelly Belly also offers jelly bean recipes for beer cocktails in your mouth. For example, to make a Michelada, eat two draft beer jelly beans, a lemon lime jelly bean and a Tabasco jelly bean.
Draft beer joins the list of offbeat Jelly Belly flavors. (Yes, these are actual flavors, part of the Harry Potter-themed collection.)
