MONSEY, N.Y. — Nearly 70 years after being discharged from the U.S. Army, World War II veteran Albert Penchansky has finally received his Good Conduct Medal.

Penchansky, now 99 years old, stood proudly Tuesday as state Sen. David Carlucci, D-New City, pinned the medal to his jacket, just over his heart.

Penchansky's daughter, Karen Schulman of Airmont, his grandson, Brad Schulman, and dozens of his contemporaries gathered for the ceremony at the Fountain View retirement residence, where Penchansky has lived for three years.

The Good Conduct Medal is earned by those with exemplary behavior during active service. In Penchansky's case, he said he earned it after one year of proper service.

In fact, his father received a letter back in 1944 that said the medal was in the mail, Carlucci recounted, holding up the original letter.

Carlucci's office worked with the Department of Veterans Affairs to track down Penchansky's long-overdue medal, the senator said.

"It's such an honor and a privilege to be able to present you with this," Carlucci said. "Thank you for your service and for the work that you do in our community."

Penchansky enlisted on Aug. 18, 1941, and was discharged on Oct. 13, 1945. He was promoted to sergeant and spent the majority of his time stationed in France.

Penchansky said he worked with two others to keep tabs on the money the U.S. government was paying to companies and other countries involved "in keeping the enemy down."

After he left the Army, Penchansky, who grew up in Bayonne, N.J., enjoyed a 50-year career as a certified public accountant. He and his wife, Jean, who died in 1987, raised two sons and a daughter in Bayonne. He has six grandchildren.

Karen Schulman, who is director of recreation at Fountain View, enjoys daily visits with her father, whom she described as an avid dancer.

"I'm very proud to be here with him and all he has accomplished in his short time of 99 years," Schulman said. "He's the best father and I'm very proud of him."
