The state Senate has approved a measure that could affect the future of charter schools in Knox County.
The bill would allow the state board of education to authorize new charter schools. Right now that decision lies with local school boards.
This law gives the state board power to overrule local school board decisions on charter applications.
It only applies for five counties where there are failing schools, and that includes Knox County.
The House passed the bill last year. It's now waiting for the governor's decision.
