The Tennessee Democratic Party announced Monday that it has hired a campaign manager to lead its efforts to defeat a proposed constitutional amendment that deals with abortion.
Lisa Carter, a Florida native who most recentlyadvised Orlando candidate Val Demings, will lead the state party's opposition to proposed Amendment 1 to the Tennessee constitution. The amendment would overturn a 2000 state Supreme Court rulingthat abortion rights are covered under the state constitution and would give lawmakers the power "to enact, amend, or repeal statutes regarding abortion."
The question goes before voters in November.
"We are excited to have Lisa Carter and her depth of experience in this crucial fight for women and victims and against Amendment 1," said Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Roy Herron in a press release announcing her hiring. "If Roe is overturned, then Amendment 1 would let tea party Republicans compel Tennessee women to bear rapists' children and even deny couples the right to save the desperately ill wife's life. Lisa's job is to tell Tennesseans about this tea party Republican attempt to deny women, even victims of rape or incest or life-threatening disease, the right to choose."
Carter also will advise Democratic candidates this fall.
