RICHMOND, Va. — During the drama-filled start to the federal corruption trial of Virginia's former governor and his wife Tuesday, defense lawyers revealed that Bob and Maureen McDonnells' marriage had "broken down" and said the state's former first lady had a crush on a wealthy businessman.

The McDonnells are accused of conspiring with that businessman, former Chief Executive Jonnie Williams of Virginia-based Star Scientific, to exchange gifts and loans for the power and influence of the governor's office.

Williams first gave Bob McDonnell free flights on his private jet as a campaign donation and became Maureen McDonnell's "favorite playmate" as her husband instead paid attention to state business, said Bill Burck, Maureen McDonnell's lead lawyer.

The trial in U.S. District Court, which does not allow cameras or other electronic devices in the courtroom, in Virginia's capital continues with the prosecution's list of witnesses.

1. Jerri Fulkerson on the stand

At the end of the day Tuesday, Jerri Fulkerson, Jonnie Williams' personal assistant, had testified that she signed two $50,000 checks that Williams gave to Maureen McDonnell.

Fulkerson also spoke about many of the business trips that the former governor and his wife took on Williams' plane. The prosecution presented e-mails that showed contact between Fulkerson and Monica Block, Bob McDonnell's scheduler when he was governor.

2. Jonnie Williams next up?

During the trial's opening statements, Prosecutor Jessica Aber said Williams would take the stand to tell jurors he had conspired with the McDonnells to exchange gifts and loans for favors from the governor.

"Mr. Williams is going to tell you that what he and the McDonnells were doing was wrong and that's why he tried to hide it," Aber said. Williams would make sense as a witness to follow up Fulkerson, but the prosecution's witness list has many other names on it.

3. Names left on the witness list

Three witnesses already have testified, and the prosecution has 58 additional people on its list.

Among the more high-profile names: Bob McDonnell's sister — who also is named Maureen McDonnell — and three of the governor's five children, Sean, Rachel and Bobby. Cailin McDonnell Young, Bob McDonnell's daughter, testified Tuesday.

Block, who exchanged many e-mails with Fulkerson, is also on the list.

4. Cailin McDonnell Young's testimony

Young broke down in tears on the stand after being shown photos of her 2011 wedding.

The prosecution grilled her on the details of her wedding and reception and what she and her now husband paid for themselves. She said they had intended to pay for the entire wedding themselves and was shocked when her mother told her that Williams offered to pay $15,000 toward her reception.

"She told me Mr. Williams was so impressed by me and enjoyed meeting me and as a wedding gift wanted to pay for our reception," McDonnell Young said. Expect a deeper look at this wedding's expenses.

5. Will more be revealed about the relationship between the governor's wife and Williams?

If Williams takes the stand, he'll likely be asked whether he knew about Maureen McDonnell's crush.

The defense said the two exchanged more than 1,200 texts and phone calls but no details of an affair have been revealed or implied. For now, the defense lawyers seem to be using the crush as a way to explain that the former governor and his wife could not have conspired with each other because they were barely communicating.
