Update 5:30 p.m. Saturday:
All eastbound lanes of I-40 in Cookeville have reopened, according to THP. The interstate was closed for several hours Saturday because of several chain reaction crashes over a three mile stretch.
(WBIR) Several crashes involving nearly 20 vehicles shut down eastbound I-40 in Cookeville on Saturday afternoon, according to dispatchers at the Tennessee Highway Patrol's Cookeville Branch.
Dispatchers told 10News the first crash happened around 11 a.m. central time and led to a chain reaction of 10 separate crashes.
Only one of those crashes involved injuries and officials said those were believed to be non-life threatening.
In total, 18 different vehicles got caught in the chain reaction crashes.
The incidents happened over a three mile stretch of the interstate from mile markers 298 to 301.
Authorities shut down the eastbound lanes beginning at mile marker 290 once traffic started backing up. Drivers were routed onto State Highway 70 then back onto interstate 40.
THP Dispatch said they couldn't say for certain whether snow or ice had caused the crash; however, they did say TDOT had crews treating the roads in the area.
They hope to have the road fully reopened by 5:30 p.m.
