A jury deadlocked on a first-degree murder charge but convicted Dunn of second-degree attempted murder. Letters to the editor:

People should express outrage at the result of the Michael Dunn trial. The defense banked on racism. A young black male listening to loud hip-hop music? He must be dangerous. He must be reaching for a gun ("Dunn verdict sparks debate, sets stage for retrial").

YOUR SAY INTERACTIVE: Michael Dunn verdict and race in America

Law enforcement officers can rely on racism, subconscious or not, to decide whom to pull over for minor traffic offenses. And our Supreme Court has sanctioned that practice, allowing police officers to pull over someone based on their race, as long as there was some other, legitimate reason to do so.

As a former public defender, I understand the importance of representing your client zealously even when that means demonizing the alleged victim. But the problem here is not the defense strategy. It's that it worked.

The standard is too low under "stand your ground" laws for assailants to attack individuals with deadly force and claim self-defense. Unfortunately, the victims of this malaise are too often black males. A solution to barring overly aggressive individuals from killing someone using empty defenses and being exonerated: Amend the "stand your ground" laws to bar them from being used as a defense unless tangible evidence shows the victim in fact possessed a weapon and used it in a threatening manner.

I think "stand your ground" laws are abused by "hotheads" who lack the ability to approach or work out problems like adults.

When Dunn opened fire, he went for the kill. Dunn killed Jordan Davis. Justice failed again in Florida.

@Letti4U

He faces 60 years in prison. He's 47 yrs old. Do we need to spend more money to retry a thug? What a waste.

@confusedabout

Dunn is the poster boy for all white racists who are openly enraged by the rise of minorities in this country.

It seems Florida State Attorney Angela Corey has a history of overcharging. This killing was not premeditated. Michael Dunn went off in a fit of rage when the teenagers wouldn't turn down their music. One of the counts should have been second degree murder; that would have stuck.

"Stand your ground" has nothing to do with this debate. The issue is simple: This was not pre-meditated murder. There is no excuse for this crime, but it was not pre-meditated.

Sheldon Danto

Funny how when a white person kills a black person with what is perceived as a racial motive, the trial is all over the news and hyped up. But how many times does a black person kill another black person, or a black person kills a white person, and it is just a ho-hum moment in time?

Lou Creola

Too bad Dunn didn't just drive away. In other states, if you can back away from a situation, you have to do so. If you see a weapon being produced, you should warn the person, and then you can act in self-defense.
