(WBIR) University of Tennessee head football coach Butch Jones tweeted Wednesday morning that he's keeping Will McKamey and his family is his prayers.
McKamey, 19, of Knoxville collapsed during a football practice for the Naval Academy on Saturday and had been in a coma ever since. He passed away at the Baltimore Shock Trauma Center on Tuesday. Before enrolling in the Naval Academy this fall, McKamey graduated from Grace Christian Academy.
On Tuesday, Jones told WBIR contributor John Brice of Volquest.com that he got to know McKamey during recruitment.
"You know, obviously we're keeping Will and his family in our thoughts and prayers. I got to know Will some late in the recruiting process, and great, great person," Jones said during an interview with Brice. "Great character. We're thinking about him every minute of the day. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."
Jones said during his Volquest interview that moments like these help him remember the importance of family.
"It puts everything into perspective and the importance of life and the importance of family. Every moment I get to see my kids and my wife, it's very, very important," Jones told Brice. "Everything we do here at Tennessee is structured around the value of family, and I think it's moments like this that put things in perspective. They've been constantly on our hearts and minds."
