If you are not a quarterback, you are not in this year's Heisman Trophy race. At least not right now and not according to reporters from Gannett newspapers who annually vote on college football's biggest individual honor.
In the first of weekly Heisman updates, all eight players mentioned in the survey are quarterbacks, including Oregon's Marcus Mariota who holds a substantial lead.
The early runner-up is redshirt freshman Jameis Winston who is comfortably ahead of last year's Heisman winner Johnny Manziel.
Those three are clearly ahead of five other QBs, including AJ McCarron who has led Alabama to the last two national title and has them ranked No. 1 this season.
Having a quarterback win the Heisman is hardly novel. The last three winners and 11 of the last 12 have been quarterbacks. This year's winner will be announced Dec. 14.
Breaking down the ballots (three points are awarded for a first-place votes, two for second and one for third):
1. QB Marcus Mariota, Oregon: 17 firsts-3 seconds-1 third=58 points
2. QB Jameis Winston, Florida State: 3-11-6=37
3. QB Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M: 1-7-9=26
4. QB Bryce Petty, Baylor: 1-0-1=4
5. QB AJ McCarron Alabama: 0-0-3=3
