(WBIR) The University of Tennessee football team will play another neutral-site game, this time to open up the 2018 season.
The Charlotte Sports Foundation announced Tuesday that UT will play West Virginia University at Bank of America Stadium on September 1, 2018 to start the season. BOA Stadium is home to the NFL's Carolina Panthers.
This is the first time the Volunteers and the Mountaineers, of the Big XII Conference, will face off on the football field.
Volunteer Head Coach Butch Jones said in a statement Tuesday he's excited to have a game that will expand the program's brand and reach. "The Charlotte area is in close proximity to many of our fans, and the state of North Carolina is a key component in our recruiting efforts," Jones said. "We very much look forward to such a unique opportunity for our student-athletes and our program."
This is the first time the Tennessee football team has ever played in Charlotte, and the first game in the state of North Carolina in more than half of a century. They lost to North Carolina University 22-21 November 4, 1961.
This game will be the third neutral-site game for Tennessee in a four-year stretch. UT will play the University of Alabama-Birmingham at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn. Sept. 5, 2015 to open up the season. They will also play Virginia Tech Sept. 10, 2016 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn.
All the specifics of the UT-WVU game, including time and ticket availability, will be announced at a later date.
