The annoucement of Tennessee's starting quarterback could be coming in the next couple of days.

The battle for the starting quarterback job between Justin Worley, Nathan Peterman and Joshua Dobbs may soon be over.

"I'm hoping maybe in the next day or two we'll make that decision," Butch Jones said after Tennessee's scrimmage on Wednesday night at Neyland Stadium. The scrimmage was closed to the media.

At the beginning of camp, most had written of Nathan Peterman, considering Worley and Dobbs, who both attended high profile quarterback camps over the summer, to be the top competitors.

In the last week or so Peterman has elevated his standing and seemingly jumped Dobbs in the competition. Worley seems to continue to be the leader. The senior gets most of the first team reps when the media is allowed to watch practice and Jones has praised Worley's confidence in the last few days.

"I think it's important for our football team in moving forward that they know who the starting quarterback is and I've been pleased with all three individuals lately," Jones said. "We've charted every single throw every quarterback has made in practice and very soon we'll name a starter."

The Vols won't practice on Thursday but will hold a media day at Neyland Stadium at three o'clock. Practice is scheduled to resume Friday morning at 10:30.

As far as Wednesday night's scrimmage, Butch wasn't nearly as pleased as he was with Saturday's scrimmage.

"As a whole I didn't like our approach, I thought we lacked intensity, gave up way too many big plays defensively," Jones said. "Too many pre-snap penalties on offense, again a lot of teaching moments alot of opportunities. Some individuals now are starting to distance themselves from the pack, so we'll go back tonight, we'll grade the film and we'll start to define people's roles on this football team in moving forward."

The depth at wide receiver has created a lot of competition at that spot. Five-star freshman Josh Malone has had a rough camp but Jones praised him after Wednesday night's scrimmage. He also named Josh Smith, Jason Croom, Von Pearson and Pig Howard as guys that made plays in the scrimmage.
