CHRISTINE BRENNAN: Sport has gone too long without Triple Crown

Field: (in post position order): Medal Count (20-1); California Chrome (3-5); Matterhorn (30-1: Commanding Curve (15-1); Ride On Curlin (12-1); Matuszak (30-1); Samraat (20-1); Commissioner (20-1); Wicked Strong (6-1); General a Rod (20-1); Tonalist (8-1)

What's at stake: A victory by California Chrome will make him the 12th horse to sweep the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes). If he loses he'll be the 13th horse, since Affirmed won the last Triple Crown in 1978, to win the first two races and lose in the Belmont.

It's been 36 years since the last Triple Crown winner. California Chrome hopes to break that streak Saturday. USA TODAY Sports

Triple Crown winners: Sir Barton (1919); Gallant Fox (1930); Omaha (1935); War Admiral (1937); Whirlaway (1941); Count Fleet (1943); Assault (1946); Citation (1948); Secretariat (1973); Seattle Slew (1977) and Affirmed (1978)
