Kevin Ward Jr.'s father told the Syracuse (N.Y.) Post-Standard on Tuesday that his son ''slept with a smile on his face.''

In Kevin Ward Sr.'s first extensive remarks since his son was killed when he was struck by a car Tony Stewart was driving during a sprint car race at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park on Saturday, he said he didn't see the accident.

Instead, he was on a four-wheeler heading to a garage area where a wrecked car might go. Ward Jr.'s car was spun into an outside wall and had a flat tire.

Ward Sr. also told the Post-Standard it was the first time he had seen his son, 20, exit his vehicle during a race.

"I think the reason he probably got out of that car is who put him into the wall. He was definitely put into the wall," Ward Sr. said.

The video shows Stewart and Ward Jr. battling for position and Ward Jr.'s car getting bumped into the outside wall, where it spun out. Ward Jr. exited his sprint car under a yellow flag and began walking down the track toward the approaching cars, clearly upset with Stewart.

When the cars came around that area of the track again, the right rear of Stewart's car clips Ward Jr., who was thrown.

"Apparently, Tony Stewart was the only one driving out there who didn't see him," Ward Sr. said.

Ontario County sheriff Philip Povero said Tuesday afternoon that the accident is still under investigation and he expects it will continue for at least another two weeks. Officers still are gathering information and reviewing video of the incident.

Ward Sr. told the Post-Standard that track officials stopped him from progressing on his four-wheeler and someone else told him his son had been hit.

"I knew it was pretty serious. The officials still weren't letting us on the track," Ward Sr. said.

According to Ward Sr., he and wife Pamela, also at the track that night, watched as EMS personnel tried to revive Ward Jr. for 45 minutes.

"Tony Stewart was the best damn driver by far on the track that night. Why he had to go up as high as he did and hog my son, there's no reason for it," Ward Sr. said.
