Shaw Sports Turf begin installing Alcoa's new artificial turf playing surface on Wednesday.
Installation started on Alcoa's new turf football field on Wednesday. The Tornadoes' new playing surface is the same one used on Vanderbilt's football field and should be completed within the next two weeks.
The new field is Phase One of a renovation project that will eventually include a fieldhouse and jumbotron.
Alcoa had drainage and other problems with it's natural grass surface but the new artificial turf will allow prolonged use with limited damage.
"Our biggest benefit is gonna be field use," Alcoa Athletic Director Josh Stephens said. "Our band will be practicing on it in the evening, our pee wee and youth football teams will be able to use one the weekends when we're not on it. Our field's gonna be the same Week 12, 13 as it is gonna be week one."
Alcoa is one of several Knoxville area schools installing artificial turf fields this offseason including Pigeon Forge, Seymour and CAK.
