Rivals Gibbs and Carter battled out for bragging rights in Week 0. The Eagles topped the Hornets 16-13.
Carter 16, Gibbs 13
The Hornets hosted the Eagles to open up Week 0 play. Both teams were bogged down by early season mistakes in the first. Dual-threat Hornet QB Jonathan Freeman broke the scoreless tie with a short yardage romp into the end zone late in the first half to give Carter a 6-0 lead. Gibbs would storm right back in the third quarter. An early second half touchdown broke the doors open for the Eagles. Gibbs would take a 9-6 lead after Freeman was taken down for a safety late in the third. A Nathan Witt interception followed by a Brendan Wilson touchdown put Gibbs up for good. Freeman would scamper for a long touchdown wouldn't be enough as Gibbs beats Carter 16-13.
Alcoa 54, Smith County 13
Defending state champs Alcoa host Smith County to start the season.
Defending 3A state champions, Alcoa could have been caught looking ahead to their big game against Maryville next week. They could have let the fact that they have three games in the next nine days get the better of them. The Tornadoes; however, did just the opposite. After Mitchell McClurg scored on a 22-yard run merely 2:30 into the game, the floodgates opened. They appeared poised, focused, and it reflected as they handled business at home, whipping Smith County 54-13. The Alcoa starters only played until midway through the second quarter, and with an upcoming game only 48 hours away, the rest will be much needed as they face a tougher test in Morristown East.
