maryville-west WBIR

After dominant wins against Webb and Alcoa, Maryville looked to be invincible. But West, coming off of a 39-0 win against Karns, was determined to bring Maryville back down to earth at home.

On Maryville's first possession, it looked to be just another win as it drove down the field, ending in a score by running back Jaylen Burgess less than three minutes into the first quarter. A lightning delay would halt play for nearly an hour, but Maryville would find the endzone again, pushing their lead to 14.

But midway through the second quarter, West quarterback Seth Marshall would dodge defenders and take it to the house to put West right back in the game at 14-7. A field goal before the half would make it a 14-10 game and the momentum clearly on West's side going into the lockerroom. They would come out in the third quarter and score again. Off a Maryville kickoff, Nathan Cottrell, a Georgia Tech commit, would race it back 97-yards to the endzone. After a missed PAT, the score sat 16-14, with Maryville facing its first deficit of the season.

Maryville wasn't phased. After another Burgess touchdown made it 21-16, Maryville didn't look back and would win the game 31-16.

Maryville has now won 93 consecutive district games and will face Hardin Valley on the road. West will hit the road to play Asheville (NC).
