A distant relative of President Obama — both genealogically and politically — is seeking a Senate seat in Kansas.
Milton Wolf, Obama's second cousin once removed and a Republican who opposes Obamacare, plans to challenge incumbent Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., in a GOP primary next year.
A radiologist and a conservative activist, Wolf said in a news release announcing his candidacy: "I'm here today to fight for our Constitution and the divinely-inspired American idea of individual liberty, limited government and free enterprise. ... I'm here today to reclaim the American Dream for all Kansans and all Americans."
"His mother was a first cousin of Obama's maternal grandmother, he wrote on his website, and Wolf's mother and Obama's mother were childhood friends in Wichita, Kansas.
"'I'm enormously proud that America has elected our first black president and I'm also enormously proud to call this president family,' Wolf, 42, wrote. 'Still, I have profound differences in opinion with Barack.'
"Roberts won re-election in 2008 with 60% in the reliably red state. The incumbent senator has already begun preparing for his re-election bit to a fourth term, and he had $1.5 million in the bank as of June 30."
