Snow began falling Tuesday afternoon in parts of East Tennessee and Southeast Kentucky, as

temperatures began to plunge.

The snow fall ranged from a few flurries flying around in most of Knox County to a couple of inches of snow on the ground on parts of the Cumberland Plateau and in the higher elevations of the Smoky Mountains.

They started salting roads around 7 a.m. Tuesday in the Cumberland County area. But, the Plateau's weekly snow events have forced TDOT to take some extra precautions. The department recently bought more salt for its Plateau districts would have enough to last the winter, according to Cumberland TDOT District Manager Seth Clinard.

The wintry weather caused several school systems to close or send kids home early Tuesday, especially for districts on the Cumberland Plateau and in the mountains. School officials decided to dismiss a few hours early to ensure that they could get the students home safely before the roads became icy.
