Comcast bringing 1-gigabit internet service to Knoxville in 2017

Nov. 1, 2016: Comcast says its Gigabit internet service will be available in Knoxville in early 2017.

KNOXVILLE - Comcast says "super-fast" internet is coming to Knoxville.

The company announced Tuesday that it will start offering a residential gigabit Internet service to local customers in Knoxville in early 2017.  The new DOCSIS 3.1 technology will use the existing wiring that most people already have in their homes.

“The introduction of our 1-gigabit Internet service reflects Comcast’s ongoing commitment to deliver the fastest speeds to the most homes in Knoxville,” said Comcast Regional SVP Doug Guthrie. “Soon, early adopters in Knoxville will enjoy a new gigabit service that delivers some of the fastest speeds available, which will be a major game changer for our customers.”

Customers will need to install a new DOCSIS 3.1 compatible cable modem that is capable of delivering gigabit speeds.

In the past 15 years, Comcast says it has increased Internet speeds 17 times.
