In a major executive shakeup that could signal massive changes to come, Apple late Monday said the head of its iOS mobile software, Scott Forstall, and retail head John Browett are leaving the company.
Apple's lead designer Jony Ive and a few others will take on more responsibility, Apple said.
The departures, which come shortly before the critical holiday shopping season, might have long-term implications at Apple but are unlikely to impact its sales as Apple competitors such as Google and Amazon.com ramp up mobile offerings, says Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at tech research firm Gartner.
The immediate impact is less known. Stock markets were closed Monday and will be again Tuesday because of Hurricane Sandy, softening potential blows to Apple's stock until later in the week.
