Roane County concert celebrates women's suffrage

The concert featured top female composers and songs of the early 1920s.

ROANE COUNTY, Tenn. — The Roane Choral Society celebrated the 100th anniversary of the women's suffrage movement in the US by performing a special concert.

The concert featured top female composers and songs of the early 1920s including one song that became an anthem for the women's suffrage movement throughout the US called the "March of the Women."

The anthem focuses on women who were being treated unfairly and brutally in some situations as women fought for the right to vote.

"It is definitely important for current women and everyone of age to vote in the united states to take that right very seriously and to take advantage of that opportunity whenever possible," director Brenda Luggie said.

The director said she hopes the concert spreads a positive message in a time where it's needed.
