Painted, playable pianos debut in Downtown Knoxville

If you see a beautifully painted piano outside around downtown Knoxville -- don't be afraid to take a seat and start playing!

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Piano Project of Knoxville, a public art and music initiative featuring painted and playable pianos, launched Thursday, Oct. 10, in Downtown Knoxville.

The event was held from 4-4:30 p.m. on the Market Square stage at Bill Lyons Pavilion.

The Piano Project of Knoxville was founded by jazz pianist Brian Clay, and the launch is sponsored by the Downtown Knoxville Alliance.

Clay presented the first three decorated pianos as attendees had the opportunity to meet, play and listen to piano music.

The initiative is to support public art and music. Clay said the beautifully painted pianos will remain in public spots around downtown Knoxville for about three weeks to a month, and then get a forever home such as a school, hospital, community center, or nursing home.

"It's all about engagement, and music and arts in public spaces in Knoxville, and I'm just glad to be a part of it," Clay said.

So if you see a painted piano around downtown Knoxville -- don't be afraid to take a seat and start playing!

"From start to finish, the artwork, the pianists... it's a wonderful thing," Clay said.

The launch party included Clay, Downtown Knoxville Alliance, Dogwood Arts, City of Knoxville Public Arts Committee and Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero.
