Free car cleaning for football fans

TDOT's Clean Out Your Car Week Tour starts near Neyland Stadium Saturday with anti-litter tips, games, and prizes and the Nobody Trashes Tennessee Clean Team

The Nobody Trashes Tennessee Clean Team will be on campus near Neyland Stadium Saturday at Volunteer Village. It's the kick off of TDOT's Clean Out Your Car Week Tour.

Research conducted in 2016 shows that litter offenders throw trash out of their cars to keep the interiors clean. That's why TDOT will offer complimentary car cleanings to get rid of any trash that could turn into highway litter.

Here's what else that research found:

Litter accumulates in places of high traffic and in places where little to no personal ownership is present, such as rest stops.

Tennesseans could not fathom littering in "sacred" Tennessee locations, such as parks, religious sites, and sporting venues.

Preserving Tennessee's natural beauty was a huge motivator to keep roadways litter-free.

During the kick-off event at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, the Nobody Trashes Tennessee Clean Team will host tailgating games and contests on campus within Volunteer Village. The booth will feature the "Litter Adds Up" box, where attendees will have a chance to guess the amount of trash within the display in half-hour increments. Prizes and giveaways will include branded ORCA tumblers, koozies, hand-held flags, stickers, litter bags and air fresheners.

Three members of the Clean Team will tour the tailgating area to offer free car cleanings. Tailgaters will learn about keeping Tennessee highways litter-free while the team distributes litter bags, removes trash, vacuums floorboard,s and washes windshields.

Litter, whether deliberate or unintentional, is punishable under Tennessee law and can cost $50 to $2,500 in fines.

To report litter: call 1-877-8-LITTER or visit TDOT's online reporting page.
