NBC Nightly News: Behind the Scenes

A Farragut High School graduate who earned a degree in journalism from The University of Tennessee and who interned at WBIR-TV is now working in New York on staff with NBC Nightly News.

(NEW YORK CITY) On a recent behind-the-scenes tour at NBC Nightly News with anchor Lester Holt came a surprise straight from East Tennessee.

"I got married in Knoxville, reception at the Foundry," said Brooke Fraser, who works on the NBC Nightly News team as a breaking news producer and researcher.

Brooke told WBIR anchors Robin Wilhoit and John Becker she had dreamed of a job at the NBC Today Show since the age of 13 and her birthday trip to New York City.

Growing up in Knoxville, Ms. Fraser graduated from Farragut High School, earned a degree in journalism from the University of Tennessee, and interned at WBIR-TV. Within a year, she landed her "dream job" at NBC's TODAY Show as an executive assistant, researcher, and production assistant for anchors Natalie Morales, Tamron Hall, Erica Hill, and Lester Holt.

"If Natalie is going to interview (singer) Jennifer Lopez I would help compile a packet as to research behind Jennifer so she knows how to formulate her questions," said Fraser.

Barely a year and-a-half into that job she transitioned into her new role at Nightly News. Fraser has worked most recently as a breaking news producer on the terrorist attacks in Paris, the mass shooting at a community college in Oregon, and preparing a background briefing book for Lester Holt prior to his work as moderator of the NBC News Democratic Debate in Charleston, South Carolina. The three-ring binder full of hundreds of pages of background material was a "gift" from Brooke to Lester just before his first vacation after taking the Nightly News job.

"He sent us a very funny picture of him on the beach reading it," said Ms. Fraser.
