Claxton Elementary keeps students safe online with new program

From Tik Tok to SnapChat, once you post online or on an app, the content is out there for the world to see.

School administrators work every day to keep your kids safe inside of class. One Anderson County school started a new program to help keep students safe online.

Deputy Donnie Delk is a school resource officer at Claxton Elementary. He explains that some people online are looking to take advantage of children.

“There's little acronyms that they can use like CS,” said Deputy Delk. “They are just fishing, fishing for information.”

‘CS’ means city and state. Online predators use that code to ask what city and state you live in. Most kids don’t know that, and some parents may not either.

From Tik Tok to SnapChat, once you post online or on an app, the content is out there for the world to see.

After noticing more students using social media, Principal Jennifer Coleman and Deputy Delk started a new program sharing information about apps on their Facebook page.

Each post breaks down how your kids could be using the app appropriately or inappropriately.

Some apps are even disguised as something else, like a calculator.

“It looks like a calculator. It can even function like a calculator,” said Coleman. “But you can also store pictures, videos, and inappropriate stuff and parents may never know you're on there.”

Here are some tips from Coleman and Deputy Delk:

  1. Know your child's password
  2. Take a look at their social media accounts
  3. Talk to them about what you should and shouldn't do online

During school hours, students are required to keep their cellphones off and in their backpacks until the end of the day, according to Coleman.

Also, several safeguards are in place on students' Chrome Books that prohibit them from accessing certain sites during the school day.

Staff at Claxton Elementary update their Facebook page frequently and share more information about an app once a week.
