NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Thursday, outside temperatures were among the hottest so far this year, as the heat index reached over 105 degrees.

A heat advisory was in place for the entire Hampton Roads area from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Eight year old Carmine McDaniel, a Newport News boy, wanted to help his mailman beat the heat. He left a cooler filled with Gatorade and water on his front porch.

"I just thought because it was really hot outside and I didn't want him to maybe pass out or anything, because they are really important so people can pay their bills and stuff like that and I didn't want him to pass out pretty much," said McDaniel.

The boy's mother sent 13News Now video of the priceless moment the mailman saw what was waiting for him on their front porch.

President Obama took to Facebook to recognize Carmine's gesture, Thursday. In the post the President says that Carmine's gesture was "not just a nice thing to do -- it's more important than a lot of people probably realize."
