Call for donations: Knox County students collecting supplies for newborns

After school program preparing "Baby Bundles" for newborns in need at Cherokee Health Systems.

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Middle school students are giving back to the community by preparing Baby Bundles for newborns at Cherokee Health Systems.

The students are part of an after-school program at the Knox County Defender's Community Law Office and the bundles are meant to go to families who can't afford some of the essentials needed when their family grows.

The items they need include unisex onesies, sleep sacks, washcloths, towels, baby wash, shampoo, caps, socks, booties, baby thermometer, infant nail clippers, nasal suction bulbs, blankets, newborn diapers, wipes, and bottles.

Once the items are collected, the students will package the items and send them to Cherokee Health Systems to be distributed out to the families in need.

"No child should enter the world without the basic necessities," Knox County Public Defender Eric Lutton said.

Cherokee Health said the bundles significantly help expecting moms in its hospital.

"Many are without the means for basic necessities of life such as money for rent, food, and transportation and are struggling with the reality that they have nothing for their newborn baby," said Director of Women's Health for Cherokee Health Systems Michael Caudle, MD.

Donations will be accepted through April 24 at the Community Law Office at 1101 Liberty Street, Knoxville, Tennessee 37919. Contact Suzanne Petty, project coordinator, at spetty@pdknox.com for group donations or any other inquiries.
