AAA: Gas prices likely to level off soon

Prices plunged with so few people on the roads, but as drivers get out once more, prices will likely level off.

With many people staying home over the last couple of months to slow the spread of coronavirus, gas prices plummetted across the country.

In Tennessee, the average price dropped another two cents this week to $1.54 a gallon, nearly 17 cents less than one month ago and nearly $1.07 less than one year.

But with more people venturing out as the safer at home order has expired statewide, experts think prices are likely to start leveling off.

“As parts of the state move towards a phased reopening, we expect to see more drivers on Tennessee roadways,” said Megan Cooper, spokesperson for AAA. “This will likely cause pump prices to fluctuate and level out over the next week.”

The average price for a gallon of regular in Knoxville is currently $1.49, down 23 cents from last month and $1.09 cheaper than a year ago.

The most expensive gas in Tennessee can be found in Nashville, Morristown, and Jackson. It's cheapest in Cleveland, Memphis, and Kingsport.

Right now, more than half of Tennessee's gas station are selling gas for less than $1.50 a gallon. Overall, the state has the tenth lowest gas prices in the country.

Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular is $1.78, a penny more expensive than last week but $1.11 cheaper than last year at this time.
