Teen beekeeper uses his hobby to start business, promote mental health

Keith Griffith started beekeeping two years ago with the help of his uncle. Now the family has a popular honey business.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bees are an important part of our everyday lives, whether we know it or not.

A Louisville teenager picked up a unique hobby to help grow the population of bees.

Keith Griffith, 13, took up beekeeping two years ago.

“I like messing with the bees and helping grow the population of bees,” Griffith said.

His uncle Shawn Griffith already had a few hives, and helped get Keith interested.

“Every day he wanted to just check on, do something with the bees,” Shawn said.

Pretty soon, their business Beeing2gether was born. The name signifies the relationship between bees and humans.

“They’re really important in our lives, so [I’m] just trying to keep them safe, raise the population,” Keith said.

Keith and Shawn harvest honey and sell it on Keith’s Instagram and website, and it’s become pretty popular.

But the hobby has done more than just help the bees and draw in customers.

It’s helped Keith process some tough times.

“We started noticing that it was helping him in other ways,” Shawn said.

“At that time, personal stuff was happening and it helped me keep my mind off of what was happening,” Keith said.

He also wrote a book called “Honeybees & Beekeeping, A Mental Health Miracle."

The Louisville community has supported the business and given Keith something to work towards, along with helping keep the bees alive and thriving.

“At the end of the day you know you did something good for the bees and the population of them,” Keith said.

Keith is using his profits to help him attend Trinity High School next year. He also puts some of the money back into his business and donates some to charity too.
