2 dead, 70 injured after train derailment in South Carolina

Two people are dead and over 70 are injured after an Amtrak train collided with a freight train in Lexington County, South Carolina early Sunday morning.

Two people are dead and over 70 are injured after an Amtrak train collided with a freight train in Lexington County, South Carolina early Sunday morning.

The collision happened around 2:30 a.m near Charleston Highway and Pine Ridge Road according to Amtrak.

The injured have been transported to local hospitals and officials say everyone has been removed from both trains.

"The 70 injuries range obviously in variety," a Lexington County spokesman stated at a press conference. "We have anything from small scratches and bumps to more sever broken bones."

Red Cross is on the scene and is opening a reception site nearby.
