A man is in custody more than a month after the body of a missing Maryville had been found dead.
The Alcoa Police Department said 40-year-old John Gauthier has been charged with criminal homicide in the death of 49-year-old Robert Schultz.
Schultz had been reported missing in Maryville and had last been seen by his family on the morning of July 23. His family said he was supposed to be heading to Loudon, Tenn. but never arrived at his destination.
His cellphone and truck were found on July 27 at two separate locations in Loudon County, and on July 28 officers recovered his body on Friendsville Road in Loudon County and identified him on Aug. 2.
Following an autopsy and witness interviews, Alcoa and Loudon County detectives said they determined Gauthier was the prime suspect in Schultz's death.
Gauthier is being held on a $1 million bond and has a court hearing pending for Sept. 17.
