The police chief is asking for prayers after what he calls a "tragic accident."

JACKSBORO, Tenn. — A child is dead after being hit by a car in a Jacksboro Walmart parking lot.

Jacksboro Police Chief Jeremy Goins says responders got the call Friday around 1:55 p.m. and were dispatched to the Walmart at 2824 Appalachian Highway in Jacksboro on reports of a pedestrian being hit.

The chief himself was one of the first to arrive on the scene and said they learned the victim was a young 2-year-old male. He was immediately transported to Tennova LaFollette Medical Center.

There were attempts made by hospital staff to stabilize him for a flight on LifeStar, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Chief Goins says investigators are reviewing video at the scene and the investigation remains open. However, at this time, he feels it is a tragic accident. His team is in contact with district attorneys office as is protocol.

"We hope everyone keeps both parties involved in this tragic event in prayer and privacy so they can grieve, please think of the first responders also, " Goins said.
