An East Knox County man faces counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault in the December shooting of a Knox County deputy.

A Knox County grand jury indicted James A. Hickman, 60, on Wednesday in the Dec. 18 shooting of Travis Wheat and assault on another deputy at Hickman's Noe Hill Lane home. A bullet struck Wheat in the arm and traveled into his chest.

The grand jury also indicted Hickman on a count of using a firearm during a dangerous felony.

He is to be arraigned June 1 in Knox County Criminal Court. He's being held in the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility.

Hickman traded fire with deputies after they responded to a call Dec. 18 and had to be treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

A deputy was shot and was recovering at UT Medical Center after officers and a suspect exchanged fire Monday night off Noe Hill Lane in East Knox County.

KCSO spokeswoman Martha Dooley said Hickman's wife called law enforcement, saying he was threatening suicide and that she left the house because she didn't feel safe.

While she was on the phone, Dooley said Hickman fired a shot in the house. Officers arrived around 7:10 p.m. that night and within a few minutes shots were exchanged between the suspect and the two deputies.
