Jefferson Co. Sheriff: Inmates recaptured after stealing truck and leaving work detail

Harris, 30, was convicted of filing false reports and was originally sentenced to two years. Cross, 48, had been sentenced to four years on theft and burglary charges.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has recaptured two inmates who walked away from a work detail on Thursday.

According to Sheriff Bud McCoig, inmates William Harris and Jeffery Allen Cross were working at White Pine School when they stole a truck and drove away around noon.

Both men were serving time for probation violations.

The two were eventually tracked down to a motel in the Gatlinburg area around 3 a.m. Friday and taken back into custody with the help of the Jefferson and Cocke County deputies and Gatlinburg police.

Sheriff McCoig said authorities found the stolen truck in Newport around 5 p.m. Thursday.

The two now face charges for escape and theft over $10,000.
