MCSO: Man arrested after shooting at deputies, almost 2-hour standoff

Nick Nunley allegedly shot at a relative and stole a car near Riceville before engaging with deputies, according to MCSO.

RICEVILLE, Tenn. — A man is in custody following a two-hour standoff with McMinn County Sheriff's deputies Monday night, a Facebook post from the sheriff's office said Tuesday.

Nick Nunley, 37, had barricaded himself in a building on a property near Riceville, Tennessee, after he allegedly shot at a relative, stole a car, pointed a gun at deputies, led them on a short chase and then fired several shots at them before getting into the standoff, according to the post.

It started around 8:30 p.m. Monday when deputies responded to a report of someone shooting at a relative and stealing a car on Highway 39W near Riceville, MCSO said.

Deputies found the suspect, Nunley, parked on County Road 73, shortly thereafter, but he allegedly pointed a handgun at them and drove off, starting a short chase.

He drove off into a field, MCSO said, got out of his car and fired several shots at deputies as they followed him. Two deputies returned fire, but did not hit him, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

He then barricaded himself in a bathhouse, leading to an almost two-hour standoff, until deputies used an armored vehicle, striking the building, to get inside, TBI said. Nunley then surrendered, and was arrested. He was then taken to McMinn County Jail.

One deputy had a minor leg injury from the entry and arrest process, MCSO said.

The TBI will also investigate the incident, at the request of 10th District Attorney General Stephen Crump.

"Law enforcement is at times very dangerous and life threatening," Sheriff Joe Guy said in the post. "I am thankful that my officers used good tactics and are able to go home to their families tonight. The situation was resolved with the best outcome for all involved."
