Memphis man caused deadly Missouri crash while fleeing

Records show Rubin was on probation in Tennessee, where he had convictions for domestic assault, drug possession, stealing and burglary.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Authorities say a Tennessee man was fleeing from police when he caused a mid-Missouri crash in which he died and killed a couple who had just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 29-year-old Demarius Rubin, of Memphis, was headed westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 54 when he collided with a car Sunday in the Jefferson City area.

The victims in the car were identified as 91-year-old Bernard Steffel and 89-year-old Marilyn Steffel. Their oldest son, Bernie Steffel Jr., says his parents celebrated their wedding anniversary last Thursday. They were heading home to the St. Louis suburb of Bellefontaine Neighbors from the Lake of the Ozarks.
