Morristown Police investigating murder-suicide

Two people are dead, including the shooter, after an overnight shooting.

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Two people in Morristown are dead after fatal shooting that appears to be a murder-suicide, according to the Morristown Police Department

MPD said it happened early Saturday morning at an apartment complex at 1155 McFarland Street. Officers responded to apartment number 6 after midnight and found three gunshot victims, according to MPD.

Police said Angel Robert Garcia, 30, of Morristown, died from his injuries. Officers said Wanda Batista Maldonado, 29, lived in the apartment, and she was taken to UT Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Detectives said they believe the shooter forced his way into the apartment and shot both victims with a .32 caliber handgun before turning the gun on himself, according to a media release from Morristown Police. MPD has identified him as Brandon Michael McMurtury, 30, of Morristown.

All three victims knew each other, and Maldonado reported she previously had problems with McMurtury, according to police.

Maldonado reached out to 10News on Facebook. She said McMurtury was stalking and harassing her.

Maldonado also said Garcia was her children's uncle, who had driven her home after an "immensely stressful" week. She said she would have died if he had not been there, and she wants the world to know he was a hero.

"He's a veteran, who has fought with everything he's had for this country," Maldonado said. "He is a hero until the very end."
