New Market, Tenn. — The death of a 3-year-old boy in Jefferson County is being investigated as a homicide, according to Sheriff Bud McCoig.

McCoig told 10News that a call came into 911 on May 24 at 2 p.m. about an unresponsive child at a home on Indian Cave Road in New Market. When emergency crews arrived, family members were performing CPR on the boy, Nicolae Gabriel Saul Hensley.

Hensley was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital, then to East Tennessee Children's Hospital, where he was placed on life support. He died on May 27.

The sheriff said the boy was at home with his father's girlfriend. The two of them had gone to visit the father for lunch at his job, then returned to the house. She said as she was walking into the house, she turned and saw the boy lying on the ground.

The child was taken to the UT forensic center for an autopsy to determine how he died.
