A 20-year-old man was shot in the eye Tuesday night outside Cawood Elementary, a school in southeastern Kentucky, a news release from Kentucky State Police said.

Austin Brown was struck in the eye as a result of multiple rounds of gunfire, the release said, and taken to University of Kentucky Medical Center in serious condition for his injuries.

Another victim, a 15-year-old girl, was wounded in her hip area by a pellet from a shotgun, the release said. Although her parents were notified and responded to the scene, they decided not to seek immediate medical attention.

The release said KSP got a report of shots fired in the parking lot of Cawood Elementary School, which is located in Harlan County, at 8:41 p.m.

No students were in the building during the time of the shooting, KSP said, but custodian and maintenance personnel were working inside the school at the time of the shooting.

During the investigation, KSP learned that a group of people were in the lot when several gunshots were fired. No arrests have been made, but KSP is working to identify who was involved in the shooting, which "could lead to multiple arrests," the release said.

KSP confirmed that the shooting was isolated and not related to the school, but said two small buildings owned by the school had minor property damage from stray gunshots, although the school building itself was not struck.
